Your King is Coming

Jesus came to earth two millenniums ago as a servant. Of course he was the greatest servant that ever lived. His service to humans will allow many people to live with God in eternity. More than 500 years before Jesus was born the prophet Zechariah said:  Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt. Zech 9:9 (NLT)

When this prophecy says “humble” it is talking about the life of Jesus 2000 years ago. Of course when it says “King” it is acknowledging the truth of his rule at the end of earth’s history. This same prophecy says that someday: I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and your King will bring peace to the nations. His realm will stretch from sea to sea…Zech 9:10 (NLT). This world will not have peace until Jesus comes back from Heaven.

The donkey that brought Jesus into Jerusalem has an interesting story. According to the Law of Moses every first born donkey had been redeemed by a lamb. The Scripture says: You must present all firstborn sons and firstborn male animals to the Lord, for they belong to him. A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the Lord by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place… Ex 13:12-13 (NLT)

In Israel the family donkey was an obedient servant that had been redeemed with the sacrificial death of another animal. This Jerusalem donkey would live to old age while the One he carried would soon die as the sacrifice for the redemption of humans. This small worker could carry great burdens. Our humble Savior died to carry the burdens of the world for us. The Law continued: …you must buy back every firstborn son. Ex 13:13 (NLT)

Many people thought their King would rule immediately. The Bible says: A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy…John 12:12-14 (NLT). The people were looking for a King.

When Jesus died on the cross many people were disappointed. For 2000 years people have been disappointed that God did not rescue them from this world. This is the reason that faith is our connection with the Savior. Every Christian learns that perseverance in faith is the way of life for a believer. The faithful and long suffering little donkey simply preformed his duty that day. We should be faithful until our Lord returns.

The King that the Jews were looking for will actually come to earth someday. The prophet Isaiah said:  For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT). Our King is coming soon and Christ will rule for all eternity.
